Background
Sadly, the building had not been used for almost 20 years, because it did not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The mechanical operating systems had fallen into disrepair and obsolescence.
With the effort of local and former residents across the country, the Auditorium is being brought back to life for local and regional public use. The Humboldt Auditorium is recognized as an economic asset to the community and Southeast Nebraska.
A nationally recognized architectural firm, TreanorHL, with extensive experience in rehabilitating historic public buildings, has been retained. Our architects tell us that they rarely find a building of such age, still in fine structural condition with great potential for new life. As such, a building survey and feasibility study has been completed.
Work is underway on the rehabilitation effort. All new, energy efficient, historically correct windows were installed in 2012. A new long-life roof, which includes insulation to meet current thermal standards, was completed in 2014.
To date our projects have been financed through a combination of public monies (grants) and private and civic contributions. These gifts demonstrate a commitment and sincerity to restore the Auditorium to serve as a force for economic revival in Southeast Nebraska. Fundraising is an on-going effort to support the continued restoration and maintenance of the Auditorium.
